How a branding shoot runs

What to expect from a session with me

Most clients I shoot for branding are small business owners, creators, coaches, and stylists who hate being on the other side of the camera. The first ten minutes are always a little stiff — and then we find your rhythm, the laptop comes out, the products come out, and we shoot the kind of working portraits that look like a real Tuesday at your desk, not a stock-photo set.

Bring your tools. Laptop, business cards, signature accessories, props that tell the story of what you do — even the messy in-progress version. We will use them. If your space is part of the brand (a studio, a salon chair, a kitchen, a workshop), we can shoot on location. If you would rather come to a clean studio, that works too.

Common questions

Asked & answered

The basics

A headshot is one polished portrait — usually shoulders-up, neutral background, designed for LinkedIn or a corporate bio. A personal branding session is a small library of portraits and lifestyle shots designed to feed your website, social media, sales pages, and ads for the next several months. Same person in front of the camera; very different deliverable. Most small business owners and creators need branding, not a single headshot.

My two packages are $275 for the 30-minute Refresh and $500 for the one-hour Essentials. Both include all editing, an online gallery delivered within two to three weeks, full commercial usage rights, and high-resolution downloads. The Refresh is a great fit for a quick content top-up; the Essentials gives you enough variety (two locations, three outfits) to fuel several months of content.

Either 30 minutes (the Refresh) or one full hour (the Essentials). Thirty minutes is enough for a focused outfit-and-headshot refresh. One hour gives us room for two locations, three outfit changes, and a wider mix of working portraits, lifestyle shots, and detail images of your products or tools.

Before the shoot

You are in extremely good company — I would estimate four out of five branding clients say exactly this in their inquiry. The whole session is built around movement, prompts, and doing your actual work in front of the camera rather than posing for it. We start with the easiest shots, build trust, and by the end most clients tell me they cannot believe they had fun. If it helps, tell me ahead of time so I can lean even harder into the working portraits and skip the awkward posed stuff entirely.

Two outfits for the Refresh, three for the Essentials. Pick a range — one polished and on-brand-color, one casual or in-the-field, one closer to how you dress on a normal workday. Avoid head-to-toe black, large branded logos, or anything you have not test-driven for a few hours. I will send a styling guide with full details once we book.

Bring the tools that tell your story. A laptop open to your real work. Your products, packaging, samples. A coffee in your favorite mug. Business cards, books you have written, a signature accessory. If you sell something physical, bring more than you think you need — extra is always better than not enough. If your work is digital, the laptop and your phone are your props.

Day of & after

Both work. If your space is part of your brand — a salon chair, a studio, a workshop, a kitchen, a coffee shop you love — let's shoot on location. The Essentials package includes two locations specifically so we can do part on-location and part somewhere else with different light. If your space is not photogenic or you would rather come to a clean studio, I can recommend Houston-area options.

Yes — I am a licensed cosmetologist as well as a photographer, trained at the Aveda Arts and Sciences Institute of Houston and currently working as a stylist at Kaleido Hair in Kingwood. I can do soft glam, full glam, or a polished hair style before the session, then shoot when you are at your most confident. One artist for the entire look means a cohesive result and no logistics to coordinate.

Your fully edited online gallery is delivered within two to three weeks of the session. The Refresh delivers 50 to 100 images; the Essentials delivers 100 to 150. You will receive both high-resolution downloads sized for print and web-optimized files sized for social media — no extra fees, no per-image charges, all yours to use.

Yes. Personal branding sessions include full commercial usage rights — you can use the images on your website, every social channel, sales pages, email marketing, and paid Facebook, Instagram, or Google ads with no extra licensing fee. You can share them with your team, your VA, your web designer, your ad agency. The only thing I ask is please credit Shots by Madi when posting publicly.
